Cruising with Jane McDonald, the popular Channel 5 travel series, returned to our screens last Friday (29 November) with a focus on cruising America's Great Lakes. Jane's journey aboard Victory Cruise Lines' MV Victory II took in Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario before heading up the St Lawrence River to Montreal. The highlight of any voyage through these inland seas is always Niagara, where Jane took a boat trip under Horseshoe Falls before careering down a zip-wire into the gorge at the base of the cataract.
Those inspired to follow in her footsteps can book a similar journey through Bon Voyage, who recommend pairing the voyage with overnight stays in Chicago and Niagara Falls. Available from May to October, the trip commences with an exploration of the Windy City before setting sail.
Typical of Victory Cruise Line's immersive shore excursions (included in the price) is a visit to Mackinac Island, a step-back-in-time experience on a car-free National Historic Landmark isle that's little changed since Victorian times. Other ports of call include Detroit, where a visit to the Henry Ford Museum includes a chance to see such notable vehicles as the limousine in which JFK was travelling on that fateful day in 1963. And of course there's that boat trip beneath the 792-metre high Horseshoe Falls - visited on an excursion that includes a tour of the surrounding wine region.
Bon Voyage can package the all-inclusive, 7-night cruise with flights (from London, Manchester or Glasgow), transfers, two nights pre-cruise in Chicago and one night post cruise in Niagara Falls from £4,695 per person. Call 0800 316 0194 or visit www.bon-voyage.co.uk
